The Convent of Jesus and Mary Religious Education Department is an outstanding one [Diocesan Inspection 2014] is at the heart of the school, contributing to the Spiritual and Moral development of students. Religious Education is taught at all Key Stages and accounts for 10% of curriculum time for Key Stage 3 and 4. In the sixth form students follow a General RE programme where contemporary issues relating to faith are covered, alongside the opportunity to select Theology A Level where students are taught Philosophy, Ethics and Christianity

Key Stage 3 (Yr7 and Yr8)
Students follow “The Way, The Truth and The Life” programme which includes the following topics
Year 7: The Way
• God’s Call
• Mission of the Church
Year 8: The Truth
Homework in KS3 should be set once a week and take up to 30 minutes to complete, and may take the form of working towards projects, key word assessments, multiple choice tests, exam questions.
Key Stage 4 (Year 9 [after Easter], Yr10 and Yr11)
All classes are entered for Eduqas GCSE in Religious Studies. Over the two and half years, students will undertake a study of Foundational Catholic Theology through the themes of Origins and Meaning and Good and Evil. Using what they have learnt they will then be expected to apply this knowledge to issues surrounding Life and Death and Sin and Forgiveness. All students will then be given the opportunity to study another World Faith, Judaism, learning about the fundamentals in beliefs, teaching and practice.
Depending on results in assessments and mocks, the students will be taught according to performance ensuring that all students’ needs are catered for.
Revision lessons are given in preparation for the mock and summer exams, at lunch and on the two Saturdays before each exam. Revision booklets have been created by the department and are stored on Fronter alongside past papers, mark schemes and a wealth of additional resources for the students to access.
Homework is set twice a week at KS4 with the expectation that they spend no less than 30-45min. Tasks to include a carousel of exam questions (to be peer assessed or teacher assessed), key word assessments and multiple choice questions (answer and set)
Key Stage 5 (Yr12 and Yr13)
A Level Theology is taught according to the AQA syllabus. Students will undertake a study of Religious Philosophy, Religious Ethics and Christianity. At the end of the two year course students will sit two; 3hr exam papers both worth 50% of the overall grade. Students will be assessed on their knowledge and understanding (AO1) and their ability to critically analyse what they have learnt and justify viewpoints (AO2). Students will also be required to draw links between the three areas of study in their dialogue section.

Key Stage 5 (Core RE)
All student attending Catholic Schools are required to attend Religious Education lessons. In Sixth form, each student is expected to attend one lesson a week. In Yr12 students follow a course that is based on the Values of our school’s founder, St Claudine, each half term students will learn about the value of Service, Simplicity, Education, Forgiveness, Family Spirit, Love of Jesus and Mary and how they can manifest themselves in our modern world. In Yr13 students follow a course that has been designed to respond to the challenges of modern society with its changing values and ideals, students will have the opportunity to engage in discussions regarding Medical Ethics, Social issues such as poverty and learn more about their faith.
