In Art and Design Technology we have established a well-planned and resourced curriculum where pupils have the opportunity to experience a wide range of process areas and where they can explore many diverse topics. We provide a rich environment, wherein our aim is to develop individual’s creativity and to instil confidence to think differently.We promote risk taking and a personal sense of challenge. All pupils learn that they have the ability to solve complex problems, become progressive and independent learners and most importantly they enjoy their learning.
Pupils have a wide variety of experiences in Art and Design Technology; in all of these, our difference is celebrated. This is especially developed through valuing all individuals in the community and our cultural diversity: Our difference has great significance in shaping our individuality. Its relevance is as much a part of the creative process as developing practical hands on skills. Success is measured by becoming increasingly aware and reflective of the world in which we live.
We have a vision and belief in the potential of creative arts in education to enrich life and relationships and establish values founded by St Claudine and in our Catholic community - respect for the uniqueness and worth of every person, both as an individual and as a responsible member of a community in a local, national and global context.
All pupils will participate in Art at KS3 with the option to continue at GCSE level in KS4 Within Fine Art students have the opportunity to explore drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and mixed media work.
KS3 Design Technology students focus on the design process in the context of Graphics Communications and Food Technology
Students’ study of Art at A level includes a significant amount of critical studies exploring contemporary and historic Art. These discoveries are opportunities to extend students’ critical understanding, powers of analysis and appreciation of art and design in social, political and cultural contexts, to enhance their own work

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO AT KEY STAGE 4:
The Year 9 Art Foundation GCSE course is designed to prepare you for achieving the higher levels at GCSE Art and Design.
You will be building upon a broad range of skills methods and media including digital imaging to become a confident skilled young artist by the end of year 9.
KS4 YEARS 10 AND 11 ART AND DESIGN GCSE LEVEL EXAMINATIONS BOARD EDEXCEL
In Years 10 and 11, you will be using a wide range of different materials and methods to investigate stimulating creative projects in great depth. These methods will include 2-D media of drawing, painting acrylics on canvas, collage, printmaking, photography, ICT Photoshop skills and mixed media. You will also be working with 3-D sculptural techniques, using plaster casting, modrock, clay and utilising recyclable materials to create your unique and high quality artworks.
You will have the opportunity to discover how other artists, both contemporary and throughout Art history, have influenced current trends, as well as use these artists and cultural styles to influence and enhance your own work.
You are assessed 60% coursework spanning 2 years of study in years 10 and 11and 40% exam taken at the end of your course in year 11.
You will be following the Edexcel Exam Board GCSE in Art and Design.The exam coursework is assessed continuously and the examiners are keen to see the development you make as an individual throughout the course from the very beginning of Year 10 to your final exam assessed at the end of the course in Year 11. The skills you gain throughout year 10 are seen to enable you to be adept in your individual use of Art methods. You will be able to create strong artworks showing confident ability in a wide range of techniques, materials and methods. You will be seen to have strengths in particular skills areas and will be able to access the higher levels and work towards being more fluent in these. This, of course, enables you to reach the higher targets expected in year 11 with ever growing confidence and practice.

Grade B or above at GCSE (C Grade considered with Summer project and interview.)
The Art A level at The Convent has a tradition of excellence and prides itself on a long history of success. Students working as individuals and within small groups; this enables our staff to offer inspiring, stimulating lessons and to give students individual attention. We offer a multitude of disciplines, processes and skills, as well as visits to galleries to complement your studio work. You may choose to concentrate on one or two of these as the course progresses. We aim to develop your individual work through: intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers; investigative, analytical, practical and expressive skills; aesthetic understanding and critical judgement; understanding of contexts and inter-relationships between Photography, Art and Digital Media Design; knowledge of Photography, Art and Digital Media Design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.

We are really proud that every year all the year 13 students whom apply to the UAL Art Foundation courses at Camberwell and London College of Communications have been accepted against fierce National and Global competition! This has enabled the students to gain automatic access to top Art Universities of their choice.
